2002JCC MACCABI GAMES
For the first time ever, the YM-YWHA/MontrealJewish Community Centres have been selected to host the 2002 JCCMaccabi Games. From August 18-23, the city will be awash with 1500Jewish teens 13-16 years of age from around the world, 300 of whomwill represent TEAM MONTREAL. As one of 5 North American citieschosen to host this athletic cultural and social event, Montreal andits citizens, will have the opportunity to encourage and support atradition that fosters competition, community involvement and Jewishvalues.
The JCC Maccabi Games originated in 1982 as onoffspring of the Maccabian Games that are held every 4 years inIsrael. Their purpose is to provide an opportunity for Jewish youthto demonstrate their skills as athletes in an atmosphere offriendship, goodwill and Jewish traditions. There is a day set asidefrom competition devoted to a "Day of Caring and Sharing" where theathletes give their time in a community service activity. The Gamesare about giving back to the host community, not just playing intheir backyard.
Olympic-style pageantry and excitement will fillthe Molson Centre where the opening ceremonies will take place. Teensfrom Canada, U.S.A., Mexico, Great Britain, Australia and Israel willassemble proudly behind the flag of their country in the "Parade ofAthletes". The Maccabi torch will be lit; and, as has been thetradition since 1972, a tribute will be paid to the MunichEleven.
It is a rare occasion that a city is honoured withthe opportunity to host such an event. What can be more special thanvibrant teens competing alongside fellow Jews from all corners of theglobe, meeting new people and creating lifelong friendships? Can youpicture a more ideal setting than a beautiful summer day in Montrealwhere Jewish youth cheer and exert positive energy in the course offair competition?

Theweek-long festival of camaraderie and fun needs HUNDREDS ofvolunteers such as you to help make the dream happen. The investmentof a few hours or days of volunteering will bring you immensesatisfaction and wonderful memories. This is the year we can do ittogether. Please consider joining OUR TEAM as a volunteer.
